Quartz

Quartz is actually an engineered stone product that contains as much as 93% quartz particles and other materials, shaped into slabs and and bound with resins.  Quartz was created as a more adaptable and better performing alternative to granite and marble.

Granite

Granite has been a very popular countertop choice for many years when price is not a major factor in the decision to purchase.  Granite defines elegance in a kitchen.  It is almost impervious to heat.  It is very durable and strong.  There is nearly 3,000 different colors and types available.

Marble

Marble is a natural stone and no two sheets are the same.  It is a pricy material and commonly used in kitchen spaces for various reasons.  Marble can be scratched and is difficult to repair.  It is porous and can be stained if not properly treated.

Solid Surface

Solid Surface countertops are sold under the brands Avanite, Corian and Swanstone.  It is a man-made material consisting of a blend of acrylic particles and resins that are pressed into sheets and shapes.  It is considered a mid-tier countertop material and utilized quite often.

Soapstone

Soapstone is another natural stone, usually dark grey in color with a smooth, silky feel.  It has seen a resurgence as an alternative to granite.  Over time Soapstone takes on an antique-like patina that can be very attractive in some kitchen designs.  Deep, rich color.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile countertops are easy to clean and is considerably less expensive than natural stone, quartz, or solid-surface countertops.  Recent innovations in porcelain tiles offer more design options than ever before, including tiles that look like wood, marble, leather or cork.

Laminate

Laminate bears trademarks such as Formica, Nevamar and Wilsonart.  The laminates are plastic coated synthetics with a smooth surface that is easy to clean.  This is one of the most economical avenues to pursue when budget is the major material consideration.  Damage to the surface is almost impossible to repair.

Butcher Block

Butcher Block offers a beautiful and warm look in a wide range of colors and finishes.  Hardwoods such as maple and oak are the species most often used as countertop woods.  It is relatively easy to clean and very long-lasting when properly cleaned.  It can also be sanded and resealed.  Material must be properly maintained.

Concrete

If you have countertops in unusual shapes, concrete may be a material to consider as it is usually formed and shaped on location.  It can be color tinted and is heat and scratch resistant.  It provides a look that is unusual and quite sophisticated.  It has a porous surface that requires regular sealing.

Quartz vs Granite. Which One?

Quartz is an engineered stone and Granite is natural stone.  Quartz are engineered stone products and the slab colors are mainly similar in color while Granite comes directly from stone quarries and then is cut into thin slabs, polished and fabricated into countertops.  Therefore, Granite color will be unique in that the color is not determined by man, but by the stone itself.  Both Quartz and Granite are premium materials and the cost will reflect it.  For maintenance and durability Quartz holds the advantage.  Granite is a relatively porous material and requires sealing on an ongoing basis.  Quartz does not require sealing due to the resins in the material.  In any case, if you want a top-tier countertop material then Quartz or Granite are excellent choices.  There are other factors to consider and we will be happy to outline those differences to you.
